Van der Spuy & Partners has a long history dating back to 1886 when a predecessor, AM Lewis, established a legal practice in Paarl.

In the early 1900’s, AM Lewis’s son, AJ Lewis, took over the reins from his father. In the years following, the firm grew from strength to strength as different partners made their mark, first as Lewis & Basson, then as Basson & Van der Spuy, and from 1967 as Van der Spuy & Partners.

In 1992, we moved to bigger offices at 36 Thom Street, Paarl, to accommodate our ever-growing Van der Spuy family. In 1997, the firm was incorporated as Van der Spuy (Western Cape), but still trading as Van der Spuy & Partners.

The Van der Spuy family is passionate about people and serving the community. Our belief that all persons should have access to justice and protection of the law forms the basis for our strong commitment to pro bono work. We also participate in National Wills Week, where we invite people to come to our offices and have their will drafted for free.

While helping individuals is important, we see the need for empowering the community at large and therefore we keenly participate in the Radio KC, our local radio station, legal advice slot.

We also support a variety of charity and community initiatives as a firm and encourage our professionals and administrative staff to get involved with firm community projects as well. Often, our charity initiatives are proposed by the staff themselves. Recently, we supported Newborns Groote Schuur Trust by knitting for premature babies. We also supported Butterfly House, a facility that cares for vulnerable and at-risk children with aftercare, academic and personal development programs by collecting stationery, non-perishable foods and clothes.

We are focused on equipping the youth of our community. We provide financial assistance, support and in-house training for law students. We also sponsor learnerships for disabled students.

We recognise the need to care for the elderly in the community. For the elderly folk that live next to the office, we host an annual Christmas party. We also actively support Rusoord Old Age Home.

Transformation is a continuing goal of Van der Spuy & Partners and we strive to set the standard for transformation in the legal profession.

We are focused on equipping the youth of our community through financial assistance, support and in-house training for previously-disadvantaged law students. We also host vacation programmes to provide law students with practical experience, relating to the legal profession.
